TWO RELATIONSHIPS

Two cycles, two kinds of relationship.

The Five Phases are often taught through two sequences. Sheng describes support and emergence. Ke describes limits and regulation.

An ink-wash landscape with Wood at the top, followed clockwise by Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
For reflection, this phase can suggest:Growth, adaptability, and initiative.Under strain: impatience or scattered effort.Where do you notice this pattern right now?For reflection, this phase can suggest:Expression, energy, and connection.Under strain: impulsiveness or burnout.Where do you notice this pattern right now?For reflection, this phase can suggest:Steadiness, support, and practicality.Under strain: taking on too much or resisting change.Where do you notice this pattern right now?For reflection, this phase can suggest:Discernment, organization, and principle.Under strain: rigidity or excessive criticism.Where do you notice this pattern right now?For reflection, this phase can suggest:Observation, adaptability, and strategy.Under strain: hesitation or withdrawal.Where do you notice this pattern right now?
The landscape is symbolic. The sequences below carry the exact relationships.

How one phase supports the next.

Generating (shēng, 生) describes support and the conditions for emergence. It is not a claim that one material literally produces another.

  1. Wood
  2. Fire
  3. Earth
  4. Metal
  5. Water
  6. Wood
01

Wood → Fire

Growth provides conditions for activity and transformation.

02

Fire → Earth

What rises and changes eventually settles and is received.

03

Earth → Metal

What gathers can take on structure and definition.

04

Metal → Water

Structure gives way to storage, depth, and renewed flow.

05

Water → Wood

Stored potential supports the next period of growth.
